DGUV Regulations
The accident prevention rules of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) set out which organisational duties companies must meet in occupational safety and first aid.
DGUV rule 1 – principles of prevention
DGUV rule 1 is the central accident prevention regulation. Among other things it obliges companies to ensure first-aid provision, to appoint enough first aiders and to document every instance of first aid given. The DGUV recommends keeping this documentation, classically in the “first-aid log”, for at least five years, as it serves as evidence should a case later be recognised as an occupational accident.
DGUV rule 2 – company doctors and safety specialists
DGUV rule 2 governs occupational medical and safety support for companies and defines the extent to which safety specialists and company doctors must be involved, depending on the type of business and the number of employees.
Reportable occupational accidents
Occupational accidents resulting in more than three days of incapacity for work must be reported by the company to the responsible accident insurance institution via an accident notification. Near misses are not subject to a legal reporting obligation towards the insurer, but recording them systematically is considered a central preventive early-warning instrument and is expressly recommended by the DGUV.
